The £1million project to rejuvenate the centre of a Leicestershire village has moved a step closer.
Detailed plans and a computer-generated image have been released to show how Kegworth’s Market Place might look once work is complete.
The project is being jointly funded by the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP), North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC), and Kegworth Parish Council.
Funding comes from the Business Rates Pool, via the LLEP, and is matched by the district and parish councils.
Key project elements include:
- A complete makeover for Market Place
- Improved and safer layout, which keeps existing parking spaces
- Better access for deliveries to businesses
- Wider pavements, with more seating and planting
- Bike parking.
The scheme has been altered to take account of local feedback received during the summer, when plans were viewed by 1,100 people.
Work will also take place on London Road to slow traffic and improve safety.
Councillor Tony Gillard, Business and Regeneration Portfolio Holder at NWLDC, which is managing the project, said:
“This is an opportunity to improve the heart of Kegworth and reclaim it as a place where residents can shop and socialise, businesses can thrive and people want to visit.”
Councillor Andrew Priestley, Chair of Kegworth Parish Council, added:
“We’re really pleased we now have firm plans in place to improve our village and we thank everyone who has commented on them.
“We’ve taken a lot of time to try and get this right, and the views of local people have been invaluable.
“We believe the project will bring major benefits for residents, visitors and businesses.”
Some elements of the scheme have already been completed, including re-siting a bus shelter in Market Place and installing gateways to the village to help slow traffic.
The main changes are expected to start on both Market Place and London Road in early 2024 – subject to final checks.
