Two LLEP-funded regeneration projects were recognised at the 2023 Leicester ProCon Awards.
St Margaret’s Bus Station was named Regeneration Project of the Year, while St George Public Realm won Infrastructure of the Year.
Both projects were supported by the Getting Building Fund – Government funding awarded to the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP) for shovel-ready projects which helped to create jobs and support economic recovery following the Pandemic.
The £13.5 million St Margaret’s Gateway regeneration project compromised of replacing the existing bus station with an attractive and highly-efficient new facility.
The LLEP contributed £10.5million towards the project. The ambitious – and already award-winning – project is the first net zero carbon bus station building in the UK.
Acting as a gateway to the city centre, It features a glazed concourse to maximise natural lighting and cut energy consumption and a curved aluminium roof with 390 photovoltaic panels, generating more clean and green power than is needed to run the building.
Meanwhile, a total of £1.7million was allocated to the Granby Street / St George Street Regeneration gateway project.
It was used to facilitate sustainable travel into and across Leicester city centre by creating and improving pedestrian and cycle facilities and public realm.
The stretch of road – between its junctions at St George’s Way and Queen Street – has been completely overhauled including new paving, tree planting and a children’s play area.
