A £1million project to rejuvenate the centre of a Leicestershire village has been approved with some work already underway.
The Kegworth improvement project is being jointly funded by the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP), North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC), and Kegworth Parish Council.
Funding comes from the Business Rates Pool, via the LLEP, and is matched by the district and parish councils.
Key elements include:
- A complete makeover for Market Place
- Improved and safer layout, which keeps existing parking spaces
- Better access for deliveries to businesses
- Wider pavements, with more seating and planting
- Bike parking
Work will also take place on London Road to slow traffic and improve safety.
The scheme was first proposed before the Covid-19 pandemic and has been altered to take account of local feedback received last summer, when plans were viewed by 1,100 people.
Some elements of the scheme have already been completed, including re-siting a bus shelter in Market Place and installing gateways to the village to help slow traffic.
An official start date for the main works on both Market Place and London Road will be announced soon.
Councillor Tony Gillard, Business and Regeneration Portfolio Holder at NWLDC, which is managing the project, said:
“This is an opportunity to improve the heart of Kegworth and reclaim it as a place where residents can shop and socialise, businesses can thrive and people want to visit.”
