Benchmark One - Where to start...
Consider the following questions as the very starting point of planning your careers programme:

Find out about the free Careers Leader training here.
Is your careers programme tailored to the needs of all pupils, including disadvantaged young people?
Your programme should tailor support to your high priority cohorts – consider how this is done, and who is involved in making it happen.
Does the programme have the approval and backing of your Governors?
Speaking to your Careers-link Governor each term is recommended. If they would benefit from support in understanding their role, CEC have resources specifically tailored to them.
Is it underpinned by learning outcomes?
A learning journey can be a simple and effective way to demonstrate the outcomes of your careers programme, and demonstrate how those objectives build on each other through a student’s time with you. The CEC have suggested universal career-related learning outcomes
Is it linked to your whole school development plan?
Outcomes from your careers programme are felt so much wider than just understanding jobs. Check that careers is mentioned in your school development plan, and note where other outcomes are supported by careers!
Are parents and carers engaged with careers education?
This can feel daunting! the CEC have developed virtual CPD sessions for both a starting point and for embedding an institution-wide approach.
Does the Headteacher and/or Senior Leadership Team give the programme explicit backing?
Ensure they are providing oversight and staying up to date with the programme.
