Work starts on £2.7m Coalville town centre transformation project

Marlborough Square

Work has commenced on a £2.7 million project to transform Coalville’s Marlborough Square.

The redesign includes an outdoor market and space for planned events throughout the year.

The Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP) has contributed £360,000 towards the work from Business Rates Pooling.

The LLEP administers the pool, to which all nine local authorities contribute business rates – with money then granted to support the delivery of projects that drive productivity and growth of the Leicester and Leicestershire economy.

The redesign will see improvements including:

  • High-quality street furniture, including seating, bins, bollards and information panels
  • Raised planting
  • Feature LED lighting
  • Granite paving
  • Introduction of a one-way traffic system
  • Limitations on vehicle access to the northern part of the square

The project is one of several to have received contributions from Business Rates Pooling.

Speaking at the announcement of the project, Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader, NWLDC, said:

“The redesign of Marlborough Square is a really high-profile project that, together with council and partner investment in key buildings around the square, will make a huge difference to the area once it’s complete.”

The square redesign work will take around eight months, completing in late spring 2024.

Access to all businesses in the square will be retained throughout the work.
