An apprenticeship is a training programme which features a combination of paid work and the opportunity to study for a qualification. Apprenticeships are open to anyone aged 16 and over and can be done across a wide range of roles and sectors.

Apprenticeships are important to our economy, as a great option for both young people and adults to develop skills whilst being paid, and for employers to develop the skills that their business needs; it is an extremely effective way to develop and retain a solid and committed workforce.

Apprentices can ‘earn while they learn’, building vital skills that employers need, and progress their career through different qualification levels. Employers can either recruit a new apprentice into their organisation or formally train an existing worker with higher skills via an apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships at all levels are possible

Apprenticeships are available from Level 2 (equivalent to GCSEs), through to Level 7 (degree level). There is a growing demand from businesses for advanced and higher apprenticeships, to support more advanced skills needs.
